| Microsoft is promising price cuts on retail versions of Vista later this year. |
Not all Vista versions will see a price decrease. Only selected retail versions will have
their prices reduced. OEM versions of Vista, used by system builders, will not
see any price decrease.
Microsoft is doing this to try to move pc users who are currently running Windows XP
to upgrade to Windows Vista.
Should you upgrade to Vista when the price drops? It depends on your computer.
Windows Vista requires a lot more computer power than XP. Computers that run
Windows XP well, may not run Vista as well.
The minimum requirements for a pc to run Vista but possibly a bit sluggishly, is 1 GB Ram,
a processor running at least 2 Ghz, and a 64 MB video card. Most users would likely not
be satisfied with the performance of Vista with these specifications, but it should run.
For more optimal Vista performance, the pc recommendation is 2GB Ram, a processor
running at least 2.8 GHz, and a video card with at least 256 MB Ram.
For the new Aero graphics features to work in Windows Vista, the video card needs to have
at least 256 MB GDDR Ram (Gaming Ram), and run Direct X 9 or better.
